Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government scheme which provides a grant for people to switch to low carbon heating. The grant is an upfront payment of £5000 for solutions like air source heat pumps, wood pellet boilers and log gasification boilers
Biomass boilers don't qualify for a grant if:
- The house is in a urban area (an urban area is defined as one with a population of 10,000 or more)
- The house is on the gas grid
- If it is a newbuild (including self-build) house.
Selfbuild homes DO qualify for a grant for a heat pump.
The EPC report for the house must not recommend loft or cavity wall insulation OR the owner has to commit to installing that insulation* (a good idea in any case as less heat will be needed, and that's a saving every year).
*unless there's a good reason why those insulation measures aren't possible.
The installer and the product have to be MCS registered and accredited which aims to ensure the quality of the installation and the quality of the product.
